Speed is still a problem but hey Magento is much more flexible then OSC or ZenCart for developers and the proof would be found on TemplateMonster new product page called <a href="http://www.templatemonster.com/category/magento-templates/" rel="nofollow">magento templates</a>. If TM choose them as a new product line I think they know what they are doing. I’d agree with Templates Master. For average store you need at list virtual server. But it's easy to understand because Magento is most powerful ecommerce platform for now and Varien team was mostly onvolved in corporate stores rather them small business.
